The active substance in this medicine is ciprofloxacin. There are three strengths available containing 250 mg, 500 mg or 750 mg of ciprofloxacin as ciprofloxacin hydrochloride per tablet.

Cipro belongs to a group of medicines called quinolone antibiotics. This medicine is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections;

Taking Cipro Tablets with food and drink:

The tablets can be taken at any time, with or without food, however dairy products with a high calcium content (e.g. milk, yoghurt) may delay the absorption of ciprofloxacin. You should therefore avoid eating dairy products for 4 hours before and 2 hours after taking your tablets.

Avoid caffeine (e.g. coffee, tea) while taking ciprofloxacin, as this may produce undesirable effects.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking ciprofloxacin, especially) if you are driving or operating machinery.

  • Diazepam (mainly used to reduce anxiety and aid sleep);

  • Didanosine (an antiviral medicine);

Your doctor may recommend that you do not take any magnesium, aluminium, calcium, iron or zinc containing medicines while taking ciprofloxacin, e.g. antacids (for indigestion and heartburn) or multivitamin/mineral tablets. If you do take these medicines they should be taken at least 4 hours before or 2 hours after Cipro. Tell your pharmacist that you are taking ciprofloxacin when buying any other medicines.

How to take Cipro Tablets

Always follow your doctor’s instructions as to how and when to take your medicine, your pharmacist may be able to advise you if you are not sure.   • Severe systemic (whole body) infections; 500 mg – 750 mg twice daily.

In some severe infections the standard dose may be increased to 750 mg twice a day if necessary.


Elderly patients will receive a dose depending on the severity of the disorder and on their kidney function. This may therefore be lower than the standard doses stated above.

Children and adolescents

Cipro Tablets are generally unsuitable for children and adolescents (5-17 years of age) except in specific cases such as cystic fibrosis. The dose required will be worked out by the doctor depending on the child/a doles cents body weight.

Patients with reduced kidney function

If you have reduced kidney function, the doctor may reduce your dose by half or monitor the levels of drug in your blood and adjust your dose accordingly. If you have a liver problem in addition to reduced kidney function the dose will need to be reduced accordingly.

If you have taken one extra dose this is unlikely to cause problems. If you or someone else has taken more than one extra dose or an overdose of Cipro Tablets, seek medical advice immediately and take your tablets or the box with you to show the doctor if possible.

If you have forgotten to take your medicine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

There have been isolated cases of muscle weakness, crystalluria (pain or discomfort when passing water), blood in the urine, increased blood sugar resulting in feeling thirsty and a need to urinate more often which may need treatment by your doctor. Also reported is inflammation of the tendons (particularly the Achilles tendon), if you experience these symptoms, rest the affected limb, discontinue treatment and seek medical advice immediately.

Some people may be allergic to Cipro Tablets. If this is the case, a reaction usually occurs shortly after you take the tablets. Very rarely these allergic reactions can be life threatening. If you experience any wheeziness, difficulty breathing, fever, swelling of the eyelids, face or lips rash or itching (especially of the whole body) you should stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical advice.

There have been reported cases of pulmonary embolism symptoms of which include chest pains shortness of breath, palpitations and coughing up blood. Also reported is a condition called “Pseudomembranous colitis”, (which causes attacks of diarrhoea, sometimes containing blood and/or mucus), severe headaches or migraines, liver problems (e.g. yellowing of skin and whites of eyes) and kidney problems (decreased urinary frequency). These are potential serious side effects and you will need to seek urgent medical attention.

In isolated cases, some poop c rimy experience paranoia, hallucinations, unclear speech and disorganised and restless behaviour (involving in some cases a risk of self-injury). If you experience these symptoms, stop taking your tablets and see your doctor immediately.
