What is it?
One of the most vulnerable parts of the human body to diseases are the eyes. Is Tobradex an antibiotic?
An antibiotic is a substance of microbial, animal or plant origin that can inhibit the growth of microorganisms or cause their death, for example, bacteria that, in our case, can cause inflammation or eye disease. That is what Tobradex directly fights with. Also, this drug consists of the active ingredients which are tobramycin 0.3% (an antibiotic) and dexamethasone 0.1% (a corticosteroid).
Dexamethasone and tobramycin ophthalmic (for the eyes) is a combination antibiotic and steroid medicine that is used to treat eye inflammation caused by uveitis, eye injury, radiation, burns or certain other conditions. This medicine is used when there is a risk of bacterial infection in or around the eye.
Are Tobradex and Tobramycin the same?
These two are the drugs for the eyes treatment, mainly conjunctivitis, though Tobradex can be used in more cases of the eyes healing then tobramycin. Tobradex has two available dosage forms and a person can choose any as the effect of the treatment will be the same, no matter what he/she used the eye drops or the eye ointment.
What are Tobradex eye drops used for? (Will tobradex treat blepharitis, stye?)
There is a big amount of disease which might hit the eye. Tobradex can be used in many cases of treatment of the injured eye. There are two types of infections in which you can’t use this drug: fungal infection and viral infection. To make it clearer, let’s take two well-known eye diseases: stye and blepharitis. If we want to know if we can use this drug for treatment we should know what kind of infections these are.
Stye is a bacterial infection of an oil gland in the eyelid as for the blepharitis, it might be caused by different reasons such as dry eyes, parasites or bacterial eyelid infection. That means that we need antibacterial treatment and as we know Tobradex has this characteristic.
When does Tobradex start to work?
Eye drops are instilled in 1-2 drops into the affected eye (or eye) every 4-6 hours. If the infection of the eye hasn’t harmed the eye to much you won’t need to use for a long time. But if the infection spread on the whole eye in the first 24-48 hours, after observing the changes, the dose may be increased to 1-2 drops every 2 hours.
Tobradex reduces the redness of the eyes in the first two hours, the swelling of the eye is also under this effect. It takes around 3-4 days for the absolutely eye improvement as Tobradex works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Continue to use this medication for the full time prescribed, even if symptoms disappear after a one day. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. You shouldn’t wear your contact lenses to prevent any other infections getting into the eye. You can use it again after consulting with your doctor.
All in all, Tobradex has a big amount of cases to be used which facilitates and improves our life. It gives good, quick reaction to the affected area of the eye, it won’t harm your eyes if you use it a little longer than it should be as it also works to prevent eye infection. If you really care of your eyes than this drug is suitable to be a part of your first aid kit.
