Fluconazole, the active ingredient, belongs to a group of medicines called anti-fungal agents and it is used to treat infections caused by fungi and yeasts. The most common cause of fungal infections is yeast called Candida.
Fluconazole Capsules are used to treat the following fungal infections:
Thrush of the mouth or throat (mucosal infections); skin infections e.g. athlete’s foot, ringworm; internal (systemic) fungal infections caused by Candida, e.g. infections of the bloodstream, urinary tract or other body organs; internal (systemic) fungal infections caused by Cryptococcus e.g. cryptococcal meningitis and infections of other sites such as the lungs and skin; genital Candida infections e.g. vaginal thrush or candidal balanitis (inflammation of the end of the penis and/or foreskin).
You may also be given Fluconazole capsules to stop you getting a fungal infection (if your immune system is not working properly) or to stop an infection caused by Cryptococcus from coming back (in ADDS patients).
Before You Take Fluconazole

Taking other medicines
Check with your doctor before taking if you are taking any other medicines. The following if taken with fluconazole may interfere with the action of your medicine:
- Cisapride (for stomach upsets)

- Quinidine or calcium channel blockers (for heart disease).

How To Take Fluconazole

To treat genital Candida infection | 150mg as a single dose. |
Children: from 4 weeks to 15 years of age (where a capsule preparation is suitable)
The duration of treatment will depend on the condition being treated.

Babies under 4 weeks of age
This capsule presentation is not suitable for use. An oral suspension or intravenous infusion should be used according to the following dosage:
In the first two weeks of life same mg/kg dosing as in older children should be used but administered every 72 hours. During first 2-4 weeks of life the same dose should be given every 48 hours. A maximum dosage of 12 mg/kg every 72 hours should not be exceeded in children below two weeks of life. For children between 2-4 weeks of life 12 mg/kg every 48 hours should not be exceeded. For children with impaired renal function the daily dose should be reduced in accordance with the guidelines given for adults.
Elderly
The usual adult dose should be given unless you have kidney problems.
Patients with kidney problems:
Your doctor may modify your dose, depending on your kidney function and this may be different to the usual adult dose.

Seizures, hair loss, liver failure, inflammation, damage or disease; blood disorders which may cause fever, tiredness, bruising and sometimes abnormal bleeding; high levels of fats or low concentration of potassium in the blood, heart rhythm disturbances and very rarely severe skin reactions.
