Description
Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream is an antifungal medicine used to treat vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis) caused by Candida species. It helps relieve symptoms such as itching, burning, soreness, and abnormal discharge.

What is clotrimazole vaginal cream?
Clotrimazole is an imidazole (azole) antifungal active against many yeasts, including Candida albicans. It is used intravaginally, usually at bedtime, for a short course depending on the product strength.
Yeast infections are common. Candida can normally live on the skin and mucous membranes, including the vagina. Sometimes it can overgrow and cause symptoms. Some women also develop irritation of the vulva (skin outside the vagina).
Risk factors for recurrent infections include pregnancy, diabetes, recent antibiotic use, corticosteroid use, hormonal contraceptives, and immunosuppression. If you have frequent or recurrent symptoms, consult a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.
Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection
- Vaginal itching (mild to severe)
- Thick, white, “cottage cheese-like” discharge
- Vaginal soreness, irritation, or burning
- Redness, rash, or irritation of the vulva
Forms and dosage
Formulation |
Typical dose |
Administration |
Clotrimazole 1% |
1 applicatorful (about 50 mg) |
Intravaginally once daily at bedtime for 7 consecutive days. |
Clotrimazole 2% |
1 applicatorful (about 100 mg) |
Intravaginally once daily at bedtime for 3 consecutive days. |
How to use
- Wash hands before and after use.
- Use the applicator to insert the cream as directed, preferably at bedtime.
- Do not use the cream in the eyes, mouth, or nose (may cause burning).
- Avoid tampons, douching, and other vaginal products during treatment unless your clinician advises otherwise.
- If sex causes irritation during treatment, consider abstaining until symptoms improve.
If you miss a dose
Use it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on schedule. Do not use two doses at the same time.

Prescription
Clotrimazole vaginal cream is available over the counter (OTC) in many regions. If this is your first episode, if symptoms are severe, or if symptoms recur, it is advisable to see a healthcare provider to confirm the diagnosis.
Clinical pharmacology
Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal from the imidazole class.
Mechanism of action
Clotrimazole inhibits ergosterol synthesis by blocking lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase. This disrupts the fungal cell membrane and leads to growth inhibition or cell death (fungistatic at lower concentrations, fungicidal at higher concentrations).
Pharmacodynamics
Clotrimazole is active against many yeasts and dermatophytes. Reported MIC values vary by organism and testing conditions and are typically in the range of less than 0.062 to 8.0 mcg/mL.
Pharmacokinetics
Clotrimazole is administered topically and intravaginally. After vaginal administration, approximately 5-10% may be absorbed systemically; therapeutically active concentrations can persist locally for up to about 3 days after application.
Important safety information
Common local side effects include mild burning, irritation, or abdominal cramping.
For vaginal use only. If swallowed, contact a doctor or poison control center promptly.
Do not use clotrimazole vaginal cream if you have lower abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea/vomiting, or foul-smelling discharge—these may indicate another condition requiring medical evaluation.
Clotrimazole cream may weaken latex condoms/diaphragms during treatment and for a short time after the last dose. Use an alternative method of contraception if needed.
If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss use with a healthcare provider.
Stop use and consult a doctor if:
- Symptoms do not improve within 3 days,
- Symptoms last longer than 7 days,
- You develop rash/hives, worsening pain, fever/chills, nausea/vomiting, or foul-smelling discharge.
Contraindications and precautions
- Hypersensitivity. Do not use if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any component of the product.
- Unconfirmed diagnosis. If you have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection by a healthcare provider, seek medical advice before self-treatment.
- Age considerations. Use in children/adolescents should follow local labeling; consult a clinician if unsure.
- Eye contact. Avoid contact with eyes; rinse with water if accidental exposure occurs.
DailyMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) provides directions and labeling details: here.

Side effects
- Local irritation, burning, stinging, itching
- Pelvic/abdominal cramps
- Allergic reactions (rare): rash, hives, swelling, trouble breathing
- Worsening symptoms or foul-smelling discharge (seek medical advice)
For a broader list of side effects, see Drugs.com: here.
Drug interactions
Clinically meaningful interactions are generally unlikely because systemic absorption after vaginal use is low. If you take medicines with a narrow therapeutic range (e.g., tacrolimus, warfarin-like anticoagulants) and have concerns, consult your healthcare provider.
More patient information is available on MedlinePlus: here.
Overdose
If you think there has been an overdose or the product was swallowed, contact a poison control center or seek medical help right away. FDA labeling: Clotrimazole Vaginal Cream information.
Storage
Store at room temperature (generally 20-25°C / 68-77°F; short excursions 15-30°C / 59-86°F). Keep tightly closed, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
